Cibola Water Monitoring Report

Body

Bluewater and Rio San Jose Data as of September 29, 2025

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – This report seeks to track the flow of water in Cibola County. Bluewater Lake and the Rio San Jose both have United States Geological Survey monitoring stations where this data is pulled from.

Bluewater Lake continues its steady seasonal decline, holding 4,910 acre-feet of water as of 11:15 a.m. on September 29. The reservoir has now dropped by more than 1,200 acre-feet since mid-August, reflecting the combined effects of evaporation, limited inflows, irrigation releases, and persistent drought across the county. While the lake’s elevation and surface area remain sufficient to support recreation, the long-term drawdown underscores ongoing water stress in the region.

The Rio San Jose measured 1.91 feet on the morning of September 29, holding nearly steady compared to last week’s reading of 1.92 feet. Though fluctuations have been modest, the river continues to flow at consistently low levels that mirror broader dry conditions.
