Trout and Tiger Muskie Keep Anglers Busy at Bluewater
Fishing remained GOOD at Bluewater Lake throughout the past week, with anglers reporting success on both trout and tiger muskie. Conditions have stayed favorable despite cooler temperatures and steady wind, offering both challenge and reward for those making the trip.
Trout action has been strong, particularly when using Green PowerBait and Pistol Petes, a classic wet-fly spinner that proved especially effective this week. Multiple anglers reported reaching their limits, including Michelle Rivera, who caught five trout on May 3 using Green PowerBait. Others saw results using more active gear like Pistol Petes fished below bubble rigs.
Meanwhile, tiger muskie were active as well—Orange PowerBait, surprisingly, was reported as the most productive bait for muskie this past week. Though not always known for taking to trout-targeted baits, these apex predators were especially responsive near drop-offs and submerged brush. One angler, Santiago Chavez, hooked three tiger muskie on April 26 using Orange PowerBait, while other successful catches came using swimbaits and waterdogs.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Bluewater Lake held 9,611 acre-feet of water on May 7, declining to 9,439 acre-feet by May 12. This continued drawdown reflects seasonal trends and may begin to impact shoreline access in certain coves. Boaters and bank anglers are encouraged to check with park staff for current ramp conditions.
Fire Restrictions at Bluewater Lake
Bluewater Lake State Park continues to operate under Stage II Fire Restrictions. Visitors are reminded that all open flames, including charcoal and wood fires, are prohibited, even in developed campsites. Propane stoves may be used only in areas cleared of vegetation within a three-foot radius.
Grants Riverwalk Pond
No angler reports were received this week from the Grants Municipal Pond. The pond was last stocked in late April and should still hold a modest trout population. Anglers who fish it are encouraged to report their experience.
