RIO RANCHO, N.M. – The New Mexico Goatheads now have a date for their first puck drop.

The state’s new ECHL franchise announced that its inaugural home opener is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Rio Rancho Events Center. The game will mark the first contest in Goatheads history and the return of professional hockey to New Mexico for the first time in nearly two decades.

The opponent and the full 2026–27 ECHL schedule are expected to be announced later this week by the league. “Our entire organization has been looking forward to this moment since day one,” New Mexico Goatheads General Manager Jared Johnson said in the announcement. “To officially have Opening Night on the calendar makes everything feel real. October 16 is going to be an incredible night for our fans, our partners, and the entire state of New Mexico.”

The Goatheads said the first 6,000 fans in attendance will receive commemorative LED glow rods as part of the team’s opening night festivities.

New Mexico’s inaugural ECHL season will be presented by Isleta Resort & Casino. The Goatheads are affiliated with the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche and the AHL’s Colorado Eagles, giving the franchise a connection to the Avalanche’s professional development system.

“New Mexico has embraced this team from the very beginning,” Johnson said. “The excitement surrounding this franchise has been unbelievable, and we cannot wait to finally hit the ice in front of our fans for the first time.”

The Goatheads unveiled their team name and branding earlier this year, with an identity inspired by the desert goathead thorn and the ibex goats found in southern New Mexico’s Florida Mountains. The team is expected to continue building toward its first season through ticket sales, staffing announcements, roster development and the eventual release of its full schedule.
