GRANTS, N.M. - The Lady Pirates went 2-1 in tournament in Albuquerque last week. They defeated Espanola Valley (5-7) 49-37 on New Year's Day.

“It was nice to get this win,” said Grants High School head coach Jesi Mandagaran of the Espanola win. “The Espanola girls are very well coached that was a good win for us.”

On January 2nd they played and lost to Eldorado (6-3) by a score of 45-40.

“In a nutshell our main scorers were just ice cold—but we had underclassmen that really showed up and kept us in it,” said Mandagaran of that game. “We did what we could do defensively but at times we do not convert off of our defense.”

On January 3 they defeated Bloomfield (5-5) by a score of 58-41. Next up the Lady Pirates will play 2 games on the road and one home game.

The Pirates travel to Shiprock (6-7) on January 6.

On January 7th they travel to Thoreau (6-5). They wrap up the 3 game series when they play Miyamura (3-8) on January 9th at home.

“We just have to take care of business and stay on course,” said Mandagaran of these upcoming games. “We got wins over those teams last year, I'm sure they are hungry to get a win back.”

The Lady Hawks of Laguna-Acoma are currently 7-3 after a recent 53-17 win over Jemez Valley (0-11) on January 3rd. Next up for the Lady Hawks is Cobre High School (6-5) on Thursday, January 8th at home at 4:45pm.
