Junior Laila Martinez took the limelight in the 800-meters with a time of 2:13.65 to place first in that event. “I was very excited and very happy with the results,” said Martinez.
“I had an off-season last year—it was hard on me–coming into this season it did help me to get mentally stronger.”
Martinez also placed second in the 1600-meters with a time of 5:06.55.
“Laila continues to impress and inspire,” said GHS track coach Jesse Gamboa Notables of the 22 Pirates who participated in the state track championship were: Cardenio Chavez who placed fourth in the high jump after clearing 6”.
“It was Cardenio’s first year in the high jump–but you would not have guessed it,” said Gamboa of Cardenio’s performance.
Fellow teammate Coudy Melonas also made it to the finals on Saturday. Jenna Gurule placed eighth in the 300meter hurdles with a time of 51.28.
Tori Felipe placed 10th in shot put with a throw of: 29-05 29-09.50 26-04.25.
