The Grants High School Pirates came up a touchdown short this past weekend against the Kirtland Central Broncos (2-2) as the defense was able to hold the Broncos offense to 14 points, the lowest number of points the Pirates have held an opposing team this season. “Defensively, we were looking at creating winning matchups for ourselves—and we feel that worked well for us,” said GHS head football coach Brandon Hernandez. “Our defense played tough the entire game—they gave us a shot to win at the end,” The sole Pirate touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Julian Abeyta capped off a 15play drive in the fourth quarter with a one-yard rushing touchdown.
Hernandez summed up the game by stating, “We feel really good about our running backs – they can impact the game — we have to do a better job of teaching our offense to the young quarterbacks we have.” Freshman Tristin Fernandez was the quarterback for this game.
The Pirates will use their bye week to rest and prepare for Taos (4-1), whom they play in two weeks on Saturday, October 2, at 2 p.m. “We will rest, recharge and recover—our goal is to play Taos healthy and ready to rock and roll—Taos is a formidable opponent.”
The Pirates are on a bye week this week and are currently 1-5 heading into their next game where they will host the Taos Tigers (4-1) at the Port of the Pirates. Game time is for Saturday, October 8 at 2 p.m.
