Pirates Early Exit from State

Body

The Grants High School Boys’ Basketball Team was eliminated from the Nusenda boys 4A state basketball tournament in the first round with a 72-57 loss to Albuquerque Academy on Saturday, March 8.

The Pirates kept pace with the tough Chargers every quarter, though, in the end the Chargers outscored them in each quarter to secure their win.

The Chargers outscored the Pirates by four points in the first quarter, 21-17; and outscored them by four points in the second to make the halftime score 41-33. The Pirates were challenged by the sheer height of the Chargers who fielded two players at 6’6” and 6’ 10” – these bigs covered the paint well for the Chargers.

The Pirates tightened it up in the third quarter, allowing the Chargers to outscore them by only two points. In the crucial fourth quarter, the Chargers charged back to outscore the scrappy Pirates by four points for a final score of 72-57—ending the Pirates run at state tournament.

The Pirates wrapped up the season with a 1315 and 4-4 record.

Next week’s edition will have a complete rundown of the boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons. We will also feature players who received All-District accolades.
