Summer of Softball

Take me out to the ballgame! It’s summertime and the Lady Pirate softball team has been busy with an alumni game earlier this summer and honing their skills in anticipation for next season.

“We had a great summer so far, filled with hard work and memorable moments,” said Grants High School Head Softball coach, Victor Aldaz of his team’s summer workouts.

“We filled it with hard work and memorable moments.”

The Pirates held their annual alumni game earlier this summer and Aldaz was very pleased with the outcome. “We had about 14 former players who came out and compete,” said Aldaz.

“It’s always special to see the level of talent these ladies still bring to the field.”

Aldaz had praise for all the alumni who came out and showed the current team that they still had their talents.

Aldaz recalled a few standout players, “Destiny Chavez was impressive on the mound—hitting corners and working her rise ball with precision,” said Aldaz.

“Jazmine Morland launched a towering home run well over the fence and Jocelyn Garcia went back-to-back in the home run derby to take the title,” added Aldaz.

Aldaz emphasized that the alumni game was a good reminder to all of us of the high-level athletes that have come through the program.

The alumni game aside, Aldaz is pleased with the commitment he has seen from his players who in his words are “working hard to improve.”

Aldaz also has a few standouts in the 8th grade that are showing great promise for the future of the program. Aldaz had praise for coach Luiz Ibarra, the 8th grade coach, who is “making great strides,” and his direction of the program. “The future is definitely bright,” said Aldaz.

The Lady Pirates demonstrated these skills to the future athletes as they also hosted a youth softball camp where 28 campers participated.

“It was an awesome experience watching the next generation get excited about the game— learning fundamentals and building confidence,” said Aldaz.
