With less than a month remaining in the 2025 USL Championship regular season, New Mexico United (10-9-3, 33 pts) remains firmly in playoff contention, currently sitting in third place in the Western Conference. Despite recent ups and downs, the Black & Yellow continue to show signs of a team capable of making a late-season push.
After snapping a winless streak with back-to-back victories over Louisville and San Antonio, United fell 1–0 at home to FC Tulsa on September 13 in a match decided by a stoppage-time own goal. Despite the loss, United controlled possession, created more shots, and maintained a high defensive work rate in front of a vibrant home crowd of 9,177 on Meow Wolf Night.
Head Coach Dennis Sanchez praised the team’s resilience but emphasized the need for sharper decisionmaking in the final third and fewer critical errors in key moments. The performance also included a milestone for midfielder Sergio Rivas, who surpassed 10,000 career USL Championship minutes—becoming one of the league’s most durable and consistent performers.
United has four matches remaining in the regular season, including two upcoming road games: a visit to Monterey Bay FC on Saturday, September 20, followed by a midweek clash with Colorado Springs on September 24. The club will close the regular season with a pair of home matches in October.
With the standings tight and postseason seeding on the line, each point carries added weight. United will look to build on recent defensive improvements and capitalize on attacking opportunities as the race intensifies.
Kickoff for the September 20 match in Monterey is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Mountain Time.
