It’s a new year and it’s time to shake off those wintertime doldrums and shake some running tailfeathers.

Join us on campus at NMSU-Grants for the second annual – free – Couch to 5K run series. Starting on Monday, Feb. 5, we’ll meet at noon in front of Martinez Hall. Lace up those running shoes and plan on 30minute sessions each Monday for 9 weeks.

Designed for beginners, this 9-week run series is fashioned to avoid injuries and gain strength, stamina and running endurance. Over the course of 9-weeks, we’ll use a run plan based on Josh Clark’s C25K to gradually work from a walk-run model to running a full 5K. And we’ll complete that final 5K run on April 1 – April Fools’ Day.

For your part, prospective runner, you should plan on at least two independent run / walk sessions per week. These are vital to building endurance and preventing injury from overexertion. Just don’t overdo it: New runners often wind up on the injured list from doing too much, too fast. Take it slow and steady for the win.

There is no cost or registration required for this C25K. Just turn up and a make a commitment to stick to it. If the weather threatens our Monday runs, we’ll take it indoors and meet in the Joseph A. Fidel gymnasium on campus.
