GRANTS, N.M. – On December 23, Grants Police Department was dispatched to the Grants Apartments on 1703 Cordova Court in Grants, New Mexico. While at the apartments they discovered two adult men, Jarvis and Langston Johnson, who were taking care of three minor children while allegedly intoxicated. GPD arrested the two men and booked them at the Cibola County Correctional Center in Milan, N.M. for abuse of a child (first offense – placed in a dangerous situation).

Around 7:40 p.m. on December 23 the Cibola County Regional Dispatch called GPD to check out the Grants Apartments because a man was lying on the ground. Officers arrived on scene and made contact with the man who identified himself as Langston Johnson. Police officer Kyle Saavedra noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from the man, who told the officer he was on the ground because his pants were stuck on a pole which tripped him. He sat up straight and unhooked his pants from the pole. Officer Saavedra asked L. Johnson why he was at the apartments, according to a police report L. Johnson informed the officer that he was visiting “somebody” but would not identify that person for the police. L. Johnson then asked if Officer Saavedra could examine his head, as he believed he may be bleeding. L. Johnson said that he had been involved in a fight but did not want to give any other details, according to the report this was said through slurred speech. While Officer Saavedra spoke with L. Johnson, an unidentified tenant from the apartments flagged down the officer and informed him that there were three children with L. Johnson. GPD identified a second man, also allegedly intoxicated, as Jarvis Johnson. He was discovered urinating in the parking lot of the apartments next to one of the minor children who was identified as a family member of the Johnsons.

Officer Saavedra asked L. Johnson where the other kids were and was told, “they’re in the car.” According to the police report, the men were supposed to take the children to Walmart for Christmas shopping. GPD called an ambulance for L. Johnson and he was taken to Cibola General Hospital where he was treated, released, and arrested by the police. The Grants police returned the children to their grandmother, both J. Johnson and L. Johnson are facing charges of Abuse of a Child (1st OFfesnse – Placed in a Dangerous Situation).
