GRANTS, N.M. – The latest Iran war update shows less direct U.S.-Iran fighting this week, but the conflict remains dangerous as Iran reorganizes its military, Iranian-backed groups continue pressure across the region, and the Strait of Hormuz remains the central issue.
According to the Institute for the Study of War and the Critical Threats Project, Iran’s armed forces are undergoing a major reorganization based on lessons learned from the June 2025 and Spring 2026 wars. ISW-CTP reported that Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei instructed Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff chief to complete the merger of the Armed Forces General Staff and the Khatam ol Anbia Central Headquarters, which handles joint and wartime operations. ISW-CTP assessed that the move is likely meant to improve coordination between Iran’s regular military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, reduce institutional overlap and allow faster wartime decisions.
Iran appears to be reorganizing for a longer fight.
According to ISW-CTP, Mojtaba also appointed several senior officials to military posts Aug. 10, including figures tied to the IRGC and Iran’s internal security apparatus. ISW-CTP assessed that the appointments consolidate authority for Mojtaba and his inner circle and reinforce the regime’s hardline positions, including Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz, removal of U.S. troops from the region and development of Iran’s nuclear program.
Yemen and the Red Sea
The Red Sea remains another major pressure point.
According to ISW-CTP, Republic of Yemen Government forces and the Houthis exchanged fire across several Yemeni governorates between Aug. 7 and Aug. 10. ISWCTP reported that the fighting follows reports that Saudi Arabia may be preparing a naval and possible land offensive to end the Houthi “chokehold” on Saudi Red Sea oil exports. The Houthis have imposed a blockade on Saudi Arabia since July 20, reducing Saudi Arabia’s ability to export oil and other goods.
That matters for the broader war because Iran’s pressure on Hormuz and Houthi pressure in the Red Sea both threaten major shipping routes. Even when there are fewer direct strikes between the United States and Iran, the economic pressure campaign continues.
Iraq and Militia Activity
According to ISWCTP, the Iraqi federal government appears to be taking limited steps to prevent Iranian-backed Iraqi militia attacks against Saudi Arabia and other regional states. Iraqi officials who met with a Saudi intelligence delegation pledged to prevent Iraqi territory from being used for attacks on Saudi Arabia, according to local sources cited by ISW-CTP.
ISW-CTP also reported that Iraqi militias may try to avoid true disarmament by transferring weapons to the Popular Mobilization Forces before a Sept. 30 deadline. The PMF is part of Iraq’s security structure, but it includes many Iranianbacked militias that answer to Iran rather than Iraq’s prime minister. ISW-CTP assessed that moving militia weapons into the PMF would strengthen Iranian influence inside Iraq’s security system.
According to ISWCTP, Iranian-backed Iraqi militias may also have conducted an Aug. 2 drone strike that destroyed shells for U.S.provided Iraqi tanks and armored vehicles at Camp Taji, north of Baghdad. ISW-CTP noted that it had not observed further information to confirm the Saudi report at the time of writing.
