MILAN N.M. – Every year, new studies and reports come out regarding various locations and how safe or dangerous they are to live. People loosely use these reports when making decisions about where they want to move themselves and their families. One of these kinds of reports recently named Milan as one of the safest places to live in the State of New Mexico, according to a KOAT news article. Milan even stood out against the rest of the nine locations deemed the safest to live by having the lowest property crime rate.

Joining Milan as the safest places to live in New Mexico were Corrales, Raton, Anthony, Eunice, Rio Rancho, Sunland Park, Truth or Consequences, Edgewood and Bosque Farms. The report was facilitated by Safewise and published by Only In Your State on July 5 at https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/new-mexico/safestcities-2021-nm/.

“Of the top 10 safest cities in New Mexico, Eunice has the lowest violent crime rate and Milan claims the title as the New Mexico city with the lowest property crime rate. In this small town, only four property crimes were reported in the past year,” reported the Only In Your State site.

When asked about this achievement, Milan Chief Police Carl Ustupski said, “I think that’s pretty awesome. I think that’s attributed to obviously the officers we have here but also the community. We get a lot of reports of suspicious activity and there’s a big community that looks out for things that look suspicious… Them calling in those tips go a long way.” Ustupski also talked about the difference that being fully staffed has had. More officers are now able to help out to do the job. Officers aren’t being stretched too thin anymore, and more patrols, area checks, and business checks are being executed. Ustupski added that the village’s parks were being pretty heavily targeted, but thanks to the officers and being fully staffed, increased patrols at the parks have helped as well.

“It’s great,” Ustupski reiterated concerning the Safe wise report finding. “It looks good for our community here. Since I’ve been here, I’ve noticed the strong support from most of our community. You know, it’s not only us doing that job out there; we need our village to keep an eye out too to let us know. The more eyes out there, the better.”
