CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – Two planning and zoning boards held their regular meetings earlier this month.

The City of Grants P&Z Commission May 12 meeting focused on four conditionaluse permit applications.

Robert Windhorst, city code enforcer, recommended the five-member commission approve one renewal and three applications for new home-based businesses. Each proposal complied with city Ordinance 12-1197.

Old Bear Photo, LLC, 100 Hackberry Court, operates online and supplies customers with photographic images and products. The code enforcement office has received no complaints about the business in the past year, explained Code Enforcer Windhorst.

The new business applications included Sena Stucco, 616 Jefferson Avenue; AC Plumbing & Gas, 211 Harrison Avenue; and D&V Seamless Gutters, 817 Houston Avenue. Each commercial enterprise serves customers at off-site locations which means there will not be an increased traffic level at the business location, explained the code enforcer.

The commission approved each application.

(“Due to the Facebook hack I was unable to record the [May 12] meeting,” reported Chris Roybal, city marketing director-film liaison, who added that the June 9 session will be recorded and available for viewing online.)

The Village of Milan May 13 meeting included Ordinance and Regulation Officer Michael Cavin’s report.

The Milan commissioners unanimously approved the application for a two-foot variance for 501 Milan St., installation of a speed bump (traffic control structure) on West Prewitt Street, and division of a lot on Tietjen Street.

The commission announced that Milan Ordinance Review Committee meetings have been cancelled until further notice.

Member Darin Simpson, Milan P&Z Commission, did not participate in the May monthly meeting.

(“Our meetings are open to the public now so that [May 13] P and Z was not [recorded],” said Milan Manager Sarah Austin on May 14.)

More on P&Z Commissions

The Grants and Milan Planning and Zoning Commissions are both comprised of five members who are appointed by their respective elected officials - Grants City Council, Milan Board of Trustees. Residents who disagree with P&Z decisions can file an appeal with their elected officials.

(Editor’s note: Many municipalities and nonprofit organizations implemented additional technology, such as Zoom, during the pandemic. This provided the public with access to meetings.)
