GRANTS, NM Ready, Set, Go! New Mexico is a program that provides information and tools to prepare for a wildfire emergency and a guide for creating a personal action plan. Having an emergency kit, important belongings, and an evacuation plan in place are important parts of being prepared for wildfire season. The Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands are part of a campaign called Wildfire Preparedness is Year Round. The campaign provides tasks throughout the year that follow the changing seasons in order to always be fully prepared. The message that they have shared for May is 'Get to know Ready, Set, Go!.'

Getting to know the program is beneficial to follow and simple to understand.

'Ready' stands for having a plan in place for evacuation of yourself, your family, and any animals that you may have. It also means having important documents all in one location, a bag with emergency supplies quickly available, and a meeting location for everyone involved.

'Set' means to be aware of local news about fires in the area. Continually monitor fire weather and status from trusted sources. Be ready by gathering items you may need together and load your emergency bags in your vehicle.

'Go' means that you should be ready to leave at any moment when fire is near. Do not wait to be advised to leave if your home may be in danger. Leave early enough to avoid being caught in smoke or the fire itself. Be aware that road conditions may worsen by becoming congested. Head towards a predetermined location that is safe from the fire. Identify several ways to get there if possible.

Fire is a constant threat in New Mexico. By being prepared and helping others to be as well, the loss that occurs can be reduced significantly. For more information, visit www.emnrd.nm.gov.
