MILAN, NM – This Saturday, March 25 from 10 am to 2 pm, the Milan Fire Department in conjunction with the NM State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Red Cross will be traversing the East part of the Village of Milan installing over 100 smoke alarms. “We put it out over social media, and we hung flyers on doors,” Milan Fire Chief, Daniel Urioste, said. He wants the community of Milan to be prepared for a fire, and according to Urioste, education is the key. “Educating the public is the most important thing. If people get out because of a smoke alarm, we know we’ve helped save a life.”

The Red Cross donated over 100 smoke alarms for the homes targeted for this year’s event. From Archer Street to Airport Road, the Fire Department along with Red Cross workers will knock on doors to see if people need a smoke alarm. They will not be replacing batteries in functional alarms. They will be installing new smoke alarms in homes that do not have them. The Red Cross workers will install the free alarm, while the Fire Department will do on-the-spot fire safety education and help residents create an escape route in their home if a fire should occur. According to FEMA, more than 3,000 Americans die in fires each year, and more than a third of house fires occur in a home where no smoke alarm is present. The US Fire Administration has documented over 372,000 residential fires each year. Most house fires start accidentally. Smoke alarms can save lives. If you would like an alarm installed and fire safety tips but will not be home during the event, call the Milan Fire Department at 505-287-7366 and make an appointment. The Sound The Alarm event begins at 10 am at the Milan Fire Department located at 803 Motel Dr. in the Village of Milan.
