GRANTS, N.M.- The Regular School Board Meeting on November 15 began with Superintendent Max Perez acknowledging security guards at the schools. He stated that they have been receiving many compliments on the work that they do, making students and staff feel safe. He also mentioned that they just hired three more guards, bringing security at the schools closer to full force. He then continued on to recognize the Laguna-Acoma Volleyball Team for being State Champions for two years in a row. Afterwards he said that some schools are doing various activities for Native American Heritage Month and that they appreciate the effort they put into recognizing them. He also put forth appreciation to the community for the honoring of veterans with the performance that was put on for Veterans Day at the high school, and also made note of quilts that were made for certain individual veterans.

The meeting continued on with its first presentation on School Site Successes. The first school in the presentation was for Laguna-Acoma High School. Nobody was present to represent the school by doing the presentation. Superintendent Perez stepped in to do so in their stead. He made note of some of the curriculum shown in the first slide involving a dissection table and the mechatronics lab that students make use of. The presentation moved on to formally recognize the Laguna-Acoma Volleyball Team as district and state champions. It then moved to their Cross Country Team and recognized them, and specifically Erica Martin, as the girls district and state champion.

The next school in the presentation was Seboyeta Elementary. It covered the celebration of Veterans Day by staff and students as well as the performances done for the veterans and all others present on that day in Seboyeta. It was said that the school intends to do another performance again next year.

The next school in the presentation was Cubero Elementary. They celebrated their second annual Trunk-or-Treat this year. They started this in an effort to invite families to the school and let kids participate in trick-ortreating in a safe environment. They had over 40 families participate as well as Cibola County Sheriff's Department, Cubero Fire Department, and the Pueblo of Acoma Behavioral Health Services. They plan to continue this event every year. It was said that this was started in Seboyeta as well. It was then mentioned that during Red Ribbon Week, Laguna Police officers went to Cubero and Seboyeta to talk to students about drug abuse and bullying. On national Unity Day, students also dressed in orange to show their support for anti-bullying. It was also mentioned to the board that students of both schools would participate in “Rock Your Mocs” for Native American Heritage Month, a day that celebrates the cultural footwear of indigenous tribes known as moccasins.

All of the schools and people present were thanked for sharing their successes with the Grants-Cibola County School Board.
