On August 6, 1945, the United States executed the world’s first atomic strike by dropping a uranium-based bomb named “Little Boy” on Hiroshima, Japan. Despite prior warning broadcast to the population via the Potsdam Declaration on July 26, the vast majority of casualties were civilians.

The initial blast claimed between 70,000 and 78,000 lives instantly. Over the following weeks and months, the death toll escalated dramatically to between 90,000 and 140,000 as individuals succumbed to radiation illness, severe thermal burns, and trauma.

Because Japan did not immediately surrender or concede to the unconditional terms of the Potsdam Declaration, American forces launched a secondary strike three days later.

On August 9, 1945, a plutonium device called “Fat Man” devastated Nagasaki, immediately killing 40,000 people and raising total fatalities to between 60,000 and 80,000 by the end of the year. This subsequent attack was intentionally carried out to convince the Japanese leaders that the United States possessed an active, continuous production of nuclear weapons rather than a solitary prototype.

But why did it come to this? The inception of the Manhattan project was fueled by urgency: outlasting Nazi Germany in a desperate race to secure ultimate military supremacy. However, by the time scientists unlocked the secrets of nuclear fission, geopolitical realities had shifted.

Germany issued its total surrender months before researchers successfully detonates the premier atomic device— internally named “the Gadget”— during the historic Trinity test in New Mexico on July 16, 1945. With the European conflict settled, American leadership pivoted entirely toward bringing a swift end to the brutal warfare against the fierce Japanese military in the Pacific. U.S. officials were determined to bypass a catastrophic land invasion of the Japanese mainland, an operation estimated to claim hundreds of thousands of American soldiers. Facing an uncompromising adversary, the United States aimed to deploy an unprecedented display of devastation to break the enemy’s martial resolve and force an immediate conclusion to World War II.

The monumental scientific achievement behind this weapon was steered by J. Robert Oppenheimer’s exceptional guidance as director of the Los Alamos Laboratory. Tasked with an extraordinary mission, Oppenheimer assembled and coordinated a massive partnership of premier physicists, chemists, and engineers within a highly classified New Mexico desert facility.

The ultimate executive burden of this newfound power rested upon President Harry S. Truman, who formally sanctioned the use of atomic weaponry against Japan in July 1945, issuing the definitive directive on July 25.

The weapons utilized against Hiroshima and Nagasaki were equivalent to roughly 15 to 20 kilotons of TNT, causing over 150,000 deaths by the year’s end and introducing humanity to a terrifying new warfare. An atomic detonation inflicts absolute ruin through extreme thermal energy, a colossal shockwave, and incredible radiation capable of erasing an entire municipality and poisoning the ecosystem for generations.

The immense human cost of these operations instantly sparked profound internal conflicts among the key figures who orchestrated them. Truman characterized the atomic bomb as “the most terrible bomb in the history of the world.” Reflecting on his command, Truman wrote “You know the most terrible decision a man ever has to make was made by me at Potsdam,” observing at another time, “It is an awful responsibility that has come to us.” Truman defended his actions, writing “Nobody is more disturbed over the use of atomic bombs than I am... When you have to deal with a beast you have to treat him as a beast.”

The scientific community faced a similar reckoning. Oppenheimer was deeply unsettled by the realworld consequences of his laboratory’s creations; during a post-war White House audience with President Truman, he revealed his moral anguish, saying “I have blood on my hands.”

Even Albert Einstein, whose 1939 letter to President Roosevelt originally caused early American nuclear research, deeply regretted his involvement, later declaring that signing that document was the “one great mistake in my life.”

Looking at the sheer destructive capacity of the atomic bomb makes it incredibly challenging to process how any of us would have reacted in that moment in history. This was only 81 years ago. The technology was entirely unprecedented, vastly more destructive than any prior weapon, and deployed primarily against civilians. Yet, it preserved countless American lives and was significant for Japan’s final surrender.

Would we have been willing to authorize or be involved in the use of atomic weapons against Japanese civilians to halt a brutal global conflict that had already claimed 418,500 to 420,000 American lives and between 70 and 85 million casualties worldwide? And what are we willing to do to protect our country now? It is a question that forces us to weigh the true, terrifying calculations of global peace.
