Ode to GHS

An `Ode’ poem is one in which everyday events and/or ordinary or extraordinary happenings are written about with a unique, observant eye. Odes can be serious thoughts, or less serious ponderings. They often honor people, events, seasons, nationalism, or nature. Latin American writer Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) is believed to have created the `Ode’ poem genre. A Communist who grew up in Chile, Neruda was famous for his love poems, historical epics, and political manifestos. But most of all, Neruda, once known as the Best Poet of the 20th Century, is known for his `Ode’ poetry. The following is my own `Ode’ to the autumn season and our great Grants High School! So, here goes!

`Ode’toWondrousAutumn andOldGHS

The trees are beginning to turn, Toarustyorange, brownandyellow.

The Grants High School campus Is filled with student girls and fellows.

This is the time of year Where school is well into season. The students have adapted From the previous summer’s gleaning.

Now the cool, sometimes rainy air Wisps upon your face.

Leaves are brilliant in their hues, The school backdrop is the students’ space.

A new Homecoming king and queen Are set to be crowned.

There is an air of autumn excitement Everywhere one turns around.

The Pirates’sports teams are Arrayed in their school colors Of red, black, and white.

Ourteamswon’twineverygame, But they play with all their might. Schoolssometimesdrudging, difficult First few months, Have passed in slow fashion.

Now students from grades nine through twelve Are approaching their studies with passion.

Finally, withthefirstquartercomplete, Children, teens, and even adults Are looking forward to Trick or Treats.

Halloween is almost here, Acertain sign that the crisp fall time is in full gear.

The creepy clowns, werewolves, and goblins Might come out on Halloween Night.

But make no mistake, Youngsters dressed as GHS Pirates Will give those scary creatures One enormous fright!

Later, as the weeks continue to progress, We will celebrate Thanksgiving, With a chance for students to rest. They, with family and friends, Willenjoyturkey, football, andthe warmth Of holiday camaraderie in their cozy family dens.

Somehow, it seems, Halloween, Thanksgiving And the gorgeous fall, Bring joy and happiness To the school house halls.

Before we know it, theautumnwillpassontothechill of winter time.

The school year will be nearly halfway through, And the glories of the holidays – Christmas, Hanukkah, dances, powwows, and a hearty `Feliz Navidad’- will bring joy and spirits renewed.

Butfornow, goodresidentsofCibola County, Let’s enjoy the autumn season.

Time has a way of moving forward swiftly, And so let’s celebrate if for no other reason!

- Mr. Sanders So,that’smy`Ode’toautumnand GHS! Now for the curtain call! Hahaha!

Here is our Grants High School Fight Song; it’s not an `Ode’, but its lyrics are still pretty cool in a nostalgic, and perhaps old-fashioned, but school-spirited way.

Andtotopthiscolumnon`Odes’ off, let’s look at a couple of recent student `Ode’poetry on this time of the year.

Ode to Fall

ByAmara Knighton The beautiful colors I see are orange and red.

Beautifulleavesarefallingslowly to the ground without a sound.

I smell the nice scent of pumpkin spice candles.

I hear the wind blowing and feel the nice wonderful breeze.

Fall is nice and wonderful and filled with beauty.

Leaves falling like they are in love.

It is a nice night to sit by a warm fire.

It is a nice time to celebrate Thanksgiving.

It’s a nice time to go for a nice walk and watch the leaves fall.

I love to see the beautiful colors that I see all around me.

The weather is just right. I love the wonderful cool breeze.

People start carving pumpkins for a nice glow.

Fall makes everything feel so peaceful.

I feel calm when it is fall season.

I love throwing the beautiful colorful leaves into the air.

Watching the leaves come down very slow.

The sunsets are a beautiful sight.

Spending time with family is a nice feeling.

The glow of the pumpkins are nice.

Itwouldbeabeautifulsighttosee thedeercomeoutandrunaround. I enjoy the beautiful sights and colors that God creates.

AnotherOde to the Fall

By Frankie Edwards The feeling of fall takes me back to the very first day I laid my lips on you.

Going to football games wearing yoursweatersandgettingthathint of Breezethatsentoffawhiffofyour aromatic cologne.

The cruising through the mountains, bumpingourmusic, singing our songs, and enjoying the colorfulness of trees surrounding us type of vibe. Having our debates of “what should we be for Halloween,” or roaming through Halloween stores acting like kids in an actual candy store. Happy fall season and a blessing to all as we approach the holiday season!
