Made by Design: Finding Purpose in a Vast Universe
Body

As humans, we often wonder if we are going to make a difference. We ask ourselves if we are truly important, or if we are just grasshoppers in a land of giants. Facing the unfathomable expanse of creation, it is easy to question if we matter and how God could possibly care about us.

The vastness of the universe is measured in light-years and governed by powerful forces. Yet, natural wonders serve as a constant reminder of a Creator’s involvement. The animal kingdom showcases advanced engineering, and even the simplest organisms reveal a thoughtful Designer.

Consider archaea and bacteria—the simplest organisms on earth. These single-celled, microscopic organisms possess all of the complex molecular machinery required to process energy, reproduce, and survive. They drive global nutrient cycles, shape ecosystems, and form microbiomes essential for human health, representing the vast majority of Earth’s biomass. If God has such an important, foundational role for the simplest organisms, surely He has an important one for us.

The Blueprint Within

There are 8.3 billion people in the world, alongside an immeasurable amount of animals and insects. Despite this, human beings remain a unique testament to divine design, built with intricate systems like the immune system and the brain to protect and sustain life. If we look closely at our anatomy, we find that our very bodies echo spiritual truths and prophesied the future thousands of years before the cross held the meaning it does today.

We have twelve ribs on each side, mirroring the twelve tribes of Israel we read about in the Old Testament, and the twelve disciples we read about in the New Testament.

Running from the brainstem down to the large intestine, the Vagus Nerve is our longest and most complex cranial nerve. It connects the brain, heart, and gut to calm both the body and the mind. It is not a random diagnostic; its branching structure physically resembles a cross. It shows that God is our power source, calming the storms within us. Every time our body heals or we feel peace, it is a reminder of the cross He placed inside us.

Jesus lived on this earth for thirty-three years. Similarly, the human spine contains thirty-three vertebrae that hold us upright, just as Jesus holds up the world.

Jesus was crucified and rose three days later. Modern science has proved that if you fast for three days, the human body begins to regenerate. Old cells die and new ones are born, essentially resurrecting the immune system from within.

Chosen from the Dust

Our body is a temple. God did not just create us; He made us in His image from the dust, and He still cared enough to emplace these divine markers. We do not need to search the deep oceans or the far reaches of space for a divine being. We find Him when we look inward. He has been in the design since the very beginning.

Throughout the Bible, we see how God uses the seemingly insignificant to accomplish monumental tasks. Moses described himself as “slow of speech and of tongue” and felt entirely unqualified to speak, yet God used him to set His people free. Gideon belonged to the weakest clan in his tribe and considered himself the least in his family, yet God called him a “mighty man of valor” and used him to defeat an entire army with just 300 men. David was the youngest son and an overlooked shepherd boy, yet he became a mighty warrior and king. Esther was an orphaned exile, but she allowed God to use her life to become queen and save her nation. Peter was an uneducated, impulsive fisherman who frequently made mistakes, but Jesus transformed him into the “rock” who led the early Church and preached a sermon that saved 3,000 people in one day. The woman at the well was a social outcast with a broken past, but after a single conversation with Jesus, she ran back to her city and convinced her entire community to come and meet the Messiah.

You Matter

This biological and historical complexity is far from being a product of chance. It reflects God’s intimate care and involvement in your exact existence, proving that you are fearfully, wonderfully, and intentionally made.

You may not always feel like you are making a difference, but your very existence is intentional. You matter to the Creator of the universe, and you can impact the world when you step back and let Him use your life.

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31
