Leprechauns on Mount Taylor

While on a drive up to Mount Taylor, I decided to pull off Lobo Canyon Road. I stopped where the road meets the gravel so I could check out the notification board, you know, be on the lookout for cougars and take care of the forest. All the good stuff.

But I heard something that sounded like a hammer. I decided to go check out the sound, it disrupted the peacefulness of the mountain. The sound of hammering grew louder and louder and I quietly paced through the forest. Trying not to make too much noise, I grew closer and closer to the hammering sound, but I didn’t see anything or anyone.

Then, to my surprise, the hammering stopped. I saw a little man in a velvet green suit and silky old-looking hat, he was trying to put on his footwear which he must have been hammering for some reason. After slipping on his boot, he started running but I called after him, unsure of what he was doing in the middle of the mountain.

The short man had a red beard and a thick, non-American accent. He yelled at me to leave him alone but when I heard that strange accent, I knew instantly what he was, how it shook me to my core. I must have been the luckiest person on earth at that single moment. He was a Leprechaun.

“This is my chance” I thought, I mean, wow! I can get a whole pot of gold from this! “It can’t be too hard” I thought, “It’s just a Leprechaun.”

How wrong I was.

I tried chasing after him but like smoke he vanished! I knew he couldn’t have gone far so I put on my detective hat and started walking further. I guess I went for a little hike, because before I knew it, I had stumbled upon a small creek that was flowing from the recent spring snows and saw a hill of clovers.

He stood, back turned to me, urgently taking some shiny material from a black looking cauldron and putting it into a green sack. It sounded like multiple pennies dropping into a piggy bank. I went closer and

I went closer and saw this was a Pot of Gold! As I grew closer, he poofed away again, and the gold went with him!

I don’t know where he went, I searched high and low across Mount Taylor, wanting to find him, but it was to no avail. The trek back to my car was long, and I was empty handed.

Somewhere up Mount Taylor there is a Leprechaun and his pot of gold!
