Dear editor, The August 16 edition of the Cibola Citizen printed an article describing the July 26 City Council meeting. During this meeting the article states that an engaged citizen addressed the Council asking them “to consider implementing a voting system where voters will be able to rank the candidates in order of who they prefer.” He suggested that this approach to our city elections might help to increase citizen participation in civic activities.

Thanks to the individual for voicing his opinion and strongly encourage the City Council to adopt Ranked Choice Elections.

I also support Ranked Choice Elections for statewide offices as well. In the 2023 Legislative Session, Ranked Choice Elections were proposed in Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 7 for several statewide offices including that for Governor. SJR 7 was appropriately referred to a legislative committee but was never scheduled for debate yet alone a committee vote. I understand from one of the legislative sponsors a similar piece of legislation will be submitted for consideration during the 2024 session. I encourage everyone to contact our state representatives and senators to support it. Harry Sheski
