NMSU Foundation Surpasses $500 Million in Assets
Body

Reaching a milestone like $500 million in assets under management is a moment that invites both reflection and a look ahead. For the New Mexico State University Foundation, surpassing this threshold is significant not because of the number itself but because of what it represents: trust earned, stewardship proven and opportunity expanded for Aggies now and in the years ahead.

As meaningful as this achievement is, it did not come by chance. Over the past several years, the foundation has performed consistently and intentionally across every area of its work. This progress reflects the guidance of our Board of Directors and the dedication of our foundation staff, who build meaningful relationships with alumni, donors and partners — often behind the scenes — while ensuring every gift is managed with care and invested for long-term impact.

In the last four years, the foundation’s assets under management have grown by 83%, from approximately $272 million in 2022 to more than $500 million by February 2026. The endowment now exceeds $475 million and remains the driving force behind this growth, with a profound effect on the university. Already this year, more than $14 million in earnings have been distributed to New Mexico State, directly supporting scholarships, academic programs, faculty excellence and research initiatives.

Since 2022, endowment support has funded 12,000 undergraduate and graduate scholarships, $12.5 million for faculty positions and $2.5 million for research. These are not abstract figures; they represent access, retention, discovery and opportunity for students and educators today. Just as importantly, by preserving and growing the principal, these investments continue to generate support year after year, ensuring that today’s generosity continues to create impact over time.

But growth at this scale matters only if it is matched by broad-based engagement. Over the past five years, the foundation has seen a 1,000% increase in gifts ranging from $1 to $25,000, growing from a total of $84,820 in fiscal year 2020 to nearly $965,000 in fiscal year 2025. This level of participation reflects a powerful truth: This milestone was built not by a single gift but by thousands of individuals choosing to invest in NMSU’s future. Philanthropy is not defined by size alone. Every gift is a statement of belief in NMSU’s mission, and it is that continued belief, at every level, that sustains and expands the impact we are now able to achieve.

That belief is also evident in a renewed sense of Aggie pride. A resurgence in alumni engagement has sparked new energy nationally and internationally, with new alumni networks established in cities across the country and more on the way. These connections strengthen lifelong relationships with the university while reinforcing NMSU’s role as a landgrant institution rooted in service, access and opportunity.

Annual giving campaigns like Giving Tuesday and 1888 Minutes of Giving continue to break fundraising records — not because of flash or urgency, but because donors see results. They see students supported, programs strengthened and research advancing real solutions for our communities. At its core, the NMSU Foundation exists to be a vehicle for possibility, linking private generosity with public purpose. That role carries significant responsibility.

The NMSU Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Led by an independent and engaged 33-member Board of Directors, the foundation holds full fiduciary responsibility for the stewardship, investment and management of all philanthropic funds raised on behalf of NMSU. This structure ensures disciplined oversight, strong financial management and accountability to the donors who place their trust in us.

As Board Chair Louis A. Vega has noted, surpassing $500 million is as much a responsibility as it is an achievement. It expands what’s possible for our students, and through careful investment and stewardship, we can continue to grow these resources to increase access, strengthen programs and sustain long-term support for NMSU.

Reaching this milestone also elevates the foundation’s standing nationally. It places us among a distinguished group of university foundations with the scale and capacity to support transformative, long-term investments. It strengthens our engagement with peer institutions and national networks, including the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. Most importantly, it deepens our ability to advance NMSU’s most critical priorities.

This moment arrives at an exciting time for New Mexico State University. Recently named the No. 1 university in New Mexico by U.S. News & World Report and regaining R1 research status in 2025, NMSU is demonstrating growing national prominence in scholarship, research and student success. The foundation is proud to support that momentum by providing the financial engine that sustains excellence and innovation.

Ultimately, this milestone belongs to our donors, alumni and partners. It reflects their confidence in our mission and their belief in the power of higher education to transform lives. It also reflects the leadership of our Board of Directors and the commitment of our staff, whose stewardship ensures that generosity today becomes opportunity tomorrow.

Surpassing $500 million in assets under management is not an endpoint. It is a powerful foundation — one that allows us to think bigger, extend our reach and serve New Mexico with even greater purpose.
