People change. I know for a fact I am not the same person I was in high school, or even my third year of college. Change is hard, it is not always fun, but when you come out of it you will be better for it. See, we are faced with challenges not so we can fold under the pressure, but so we can overcome them. There may be obstructions in our road to success, we can trip over them and stop completely, or we can keep moving forward. I’m at a point in my life where I feel even the obstructions are no longer that much of a bump on the road. I feel a need to change my course, it’s nice to not have obstructions constantly, but I’m not a fan of boring, mundane things. I need a challenge; without challenges we cannot grow.

Changing does not have to be a bad thing. It’s up to us to take the challenge, overcome it and be better than we were. It’s not always easy to overcome our challenges, and when I hit a brick wall, I like to think about the majestic caterpillar.

The caterpillar eats and eats and eats, eventually they hang upside down and allow change to happen. Their body melts while inside the chrysalis – in what I can only imagine is a painful and miserable experience – but what emerges from the cocoon is an incredibly beautiful butterfly. Changing is not a bad thing. It never was. We have the ability to make the best out of a bad situation.

Change can be scary, but it’s the only way to stay challenged, staying challenged is the only way to improve and ultimately, to grow. Without growth, we become stagnant and fall into a rut. Sure, it’s nice when nothing changes, but isn’t life supposed to be a journey? It’s not a very fun journey if everything is constantly the same.

After a metamorphosis, some of the new aspects of life might not be super polished and shiny. Sometimes its easy to yearn for yesterday and long for days of old. There is nothing wrong with that. You can miss days that have gone by, life isn’t always cherries and sunshine, sometimes it is difficult. Sometimes, reminiscing on good and fun times in life is helpful to keep going forward, but don’t stay stuck reminiscing for too long because you might fall into a trap which makes it impossible to grow.

Change can come for anyone at any time, it can come in any shape or size like a new relationship or a death in the family, a move from town-to-town or even a change in jobs or a promotion can bring change.

Just remember that yesterday is gone, and while it’s okay to grieve the day, we need to continue moving on. Metamorphosis is a long-term project of self-improvement. Sometimes life gets tough, grit your teeth and bear through it because when you break through that wall and get to the other side, you will be a better person for the trials suffered.

Change is hard. Change can suck. If it weren’t for change, though, we would never become better people. Change, and stressful situations, shouldn’t be looked at like a problem, but a blessing instead. With this challenge, you can become a better, stronger person. But it is up to you whether the challenge becomes a growth experience or a detriment. Find the sweet in the sour, don’t let it all be terrible and keep your chin up.

Change can be a good thing if you let it be.
