GRANTS, NM – The Gifted and Talented Education Elementary Department put together a mock city council meeting for all students in the district who are in the program, the mock city council meeting was a part of the three-part field trip that students participated in, on April 12.

The first part of the field trip for the GATE students included a city tour to deepen the knowledge of students regarding the City of Grants. The students visited the New Mexico Mining Museum and also received a tour of the museum. Following the museum visit the students went to Dairy Queen for some bonding and it was the first meetup of all the GATE students in the district.

The GATE students then participated in their Mock City Council Meeting Activity at City Hall. GATE teacher Rodney King C. Lisondra said, “In fulfillment of the service option and accommodation to all gifted students, I created [the mock council meeting] to expose students to real-life in-service trainings such as school and community services and activities to broaden their knowledge and experience on the real-life situations and expectations.” Lisondra partnered with Mayor Erik Garcia to set up the Mock City Council Meeting to be conducted by the GATE students. Garcia assisted in writing the script for students to follow and the overall set-up of the Mock Council Meeting.

The meeting was livestreamed and is available to be replayed on the City of Grants Facebook page and the City of Grants NM YouTube.
