GHS Boys Soccer Makes Strides Against Tough Teams

GRANTS, N.M. - Last week, the GHS boys’ soccer team played two games, with one match against Hope Christian and another against Belen.

Both games were fought hard, but unfortunately neither resulted in a win as the Pirates head into a crucial stretch of the season.

Taking a deeper dive in the game against Hope Christian, it was, without a doubt, a hard fought one.

The Pirates held their own for the first 15 minutes, and then unfortunately after the first goal, the Huskies followed with five more in short order.

Trailing 6-0, the Pirate boys undeniably gave it their all, and overall did considerably well, given the circumstances. Grants did ultimately end up scoring on the Huskie, an accomplishment in itself, considering the strength of the Hope Christian team.

It was the first time Grants had faced Hope Christian in quite a few years, so the hope of the players is that they can continue to put up a fight against the Huskies the next time they face off on October 8.

“I feel as if we did well in both games (against Belen and Hope Christian,” Senior goalkeeper Kyler Bell said. “It stinks that we didn't get the outcomes we wanted and I hope we can beat them next time we play them.”

“Hope Christian is a good team but I don’t think they're 6-1 better than us. Honestly, we had Belen beat, game-wise, but we just couldn't finish opportunities.”

On a more positive note, the Pirates faced Belen late last week, with this match ending in a much closer score. So close in fact, it was a 0-0 tie even after penalty kicks.

With the game ending 00, the Pirates proved to hold their own in this game, and the boys’ team will play Belen on October 16, so it gives this young team time to prepare.
