GRANTS, N.M. - The Pirates had a tough district game against Valley last Friday and lost to a formidable Viking team by a score of 27-14.
“We made some mistakes, but we battled,” said GHS head football coach Riedinger of that game.
The Pirates were able to score in the second quarter off a pass from freshman quarterback Atanacio Gallegos who was able to find senior Ryan Rael with a 30 plus yard pass for a Pirate touchdown. Later in the third quarter Gallegos handed off to senior Rey Chavira who ran it 27 yards for the second Pirates TD of the night.
The extra points were good; however, the Pirates were unable to overcome the point deficit.
Valley, who is in the second spot in District 1 improves to 32 overall and 3-0 in districts while the Pirates drop to 2-3, 12 and will host the Espanola Sundevils (3-2, 2-1) at 2p.m. on Saturday, October 3 in the Pirates’ 2026 homecoming game.
“It’s an important game,” said Riedinger. “We need to win and I think we’ll be ready.”
Gallegos will play in his first homecoming and is excited for the opportunity.
“Espanola is a tough opponent… I feel like we can come up with the win either way,” said Gallegos, Cibola County Sports Round-Up The GHS volleyball team (13-10,0-0) defeated the Aztec Tigers in three sets last week. The set scores were 25-15, 2514, 25-23. They will play Bloomfield (5-8, 0-0) on Oct. 1 on the road.
The lady Pirates soccer team is 2-10, 0-2 after losing to district rival Hope (12-0,1-0) by a score of 18-0 on September 22. The lady Pirates then played Belen (1-9-1, 1-0) and lost 2-1 on September 24. Next up for the lady Pirates is a district game inAcademy (7-3-1,1-0) on October 1.
The GHS boys soccer team is currently 1-8-4, 0-1-1 after losing to Hope (6-4,1-0) in a district game 6-1. Roberto Arredondo scored a goal for the Pirates in that game. They went on to play Belen (2-9-3, 0-0-1) to a tie, 0-0, on September 24. Next up for the Pirates isAcademy ( 4-5, 0-0) in a district game on October 1.
The GHS cross country team will participate in the Curtis Williams invite in Gallup on October 3.
