COMMUNITYALERT Starting Monday November 20, 2023, the eastbound lanes of Santa Fe Avenue, between Iron Avenue and Breece Street will be closed. Traffic will be reduced to one lane eastbound and one lane westbound in the westbound lanes of Santa Fe Avenue. The closure is due to new sewer line installation. The project should be completed by March 2024. The construction zone will be designated as a Double Fine Zone.

December 20 Free Movie – “Rabbit Proof”

Someone said, “The Pen is Mightier Than the Sword.” In the Dec. 16 movie, “Rabbit Proof Fence”, viewers will see an example of the power of females… young females. Those aboriginal girls travel 1,500 miles on foot to return home to their loved ones. Venue is Double Six Gallery on Route 66 / 1001 W. Santa Fe Ave. Time is 11 a.m.

December 21 Shop With A Cop

Help us provide a happy holiday for underprivileged children in our community. We would like to provide 51 children (3 from each school) a $200 gift card to shop with their local Police Officers and First responders on Thursday December 21st, 2023. A carnival and lunch with Santa will be held at the Knights of Columbus following the shopping spree at Walmart. Please call Chris Madrid at 505.240.1237 to arrange for a booth. All are welcome to provide a game for children at the carnival. All proceeds go towards the children's shopping spree. To donate or for more information please call 505.287.1196.

Winter Solstice Celebration El Morro Area Arts Council is having a Winter Solstice Celebration on Thursday, December 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Old School Gallery, 4009 Highway 53 (mile marker 46, 1 mile east of El Morro National Monument). Come enjoy the music and storytelling of Flamenco Villancicos. Nicolasa Chavez and guitarist Luis Campo trace the history of Villancicos (Spanish Flamenco Holiday Songs) of Medieval Spain to the present. Johanna Harcourt will open the event with original winter compositions on Harp. Hot cider, traditional holiday baked goods available. Sponsored by NM Humanities Council. No Admission Fee.

Special Cibola Commission Meeting

The meeting of the Cibola County Board of Commissioners has been rescheduled to a Special Cibola County Commission meeting on Dec. 21 at 2 p.m., 700 E. Roosevelt Ave, Grants. This is the normal day for the meeting, but the time changed from 5 p.m. to 2 p.m.

December 31 New Year's Eve Celebration - Knights of Columbus Come celebrate the end and beginning of a new year at the New Year's Eve Celebration held at the Knights of Columbus with the Daniel Solis Band. Sunday, December 31, from 9 PM to 1 AM. Ticket price includes: Party favors, Bowl of Posole, and a Champagne Toast. Doors open at 8:15 PM. Tickets are $60 per Couple or $40 per Individual. Hosted by the Grants-Milan Rotary Club. Proceeds benefit the Backpack Program. Contact any Rotarian for tickets or respond via the FB invitation.

January 6 Free Movie - CODA

Do you know the Oscar statuette is a knight standing on a reel f film, holding a sword? All 20 of the 2024 movies to be shown at the Double Six Gallery earned an Oscar as Best Picture. The first is “CODA” (Child of Deaf Adults) and the second is “Nomadland.” Join movie fans Saturday, January 6 at 11 a.m. in the Gallery on Route 66 / 1001 W. Santa Fe Ave. for “CODA.”

The Grants Cibola County School Board will hold an inperson school board meeting on Tuesday, January 16 at 5:30 pm, at the GCCS central office boardroom.
