If there are any announcements you would like included in the community calendar, send a brief description of the event, a time and location with contact information to editor@ cibolacitizen.com. The community calendar is reserved for non-profits and local events, these announcements will run at no charge but must be under 50 words. Deadline for community calendar submissions is Friday at 5 p.m. 

COMMUNITYALERT Road Closure, City of Grants: There will be a road closure of Iron Ave. from Warren to Santa Fe Ave., including the Iron/High St. intersection, starting on Monday, February 19th, 2024 for 2 to 3 weeks for utility work. Residents of Iron and Hill St. will have access from Warren Ave. Please contact the City of Grants Special Projects office at 505-290-3722 for more information.

March 9 Free Art Camp – Shamrocks

March 9ths art camp at the Double Six Gallery will feature Ireland’s most iconic fairy – the Leprechaun. Join Myriah Scarpati-Graham and make your own little person, for Saint Patrick’s Day. Venue is on Route 66 / 1001 W. Santa Fe Ave. Time is 2 p.m. The arts are for EVERYONE!

Art Camp “Leprechauns”

Have you ever tried to catch a leprechaun? In Irish folklore, if you do, they are believed to reveal a place of treasure. This Saturday, the 9th, the Double Six Gallery will host the making of a cardboard “little person”. The art camp welcomes ALL ages and action begins at 2 p.m. Venue location is Route 66/1001 W. Santa Fe Ave. Let the fun begin!

Native American Stories at El Malpais National Monument Join the engaging, entertaining, and educating Robert Torres as he tells Native American stories at El Malpais National Monument visitor center on Saturday, March 9, 2024. This free event is from 6:00-8:30 pm on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the El Malpais Visitor Center located at 1900 East Santa Fe Avenue in Grants, New Mexico.

March 10 Daylight Savings Time Starts

Starting at 2 a.m. on March 10, the clocks will “spring forward” by one hour.

Academy Awards

This Sunday at 7 p.m. on ABC, the 96th Academy Awards Ceremony will announce one of these films as the Best Picture of 2023: “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things” or “The Zone of Interest”. How many have you seen? Which one would get your vote?

March 15 Music Concert DVD “A Tribute to Teachers” is featured on Friday, March 15 via the DVD program hosted by Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. This concert begins at 4 p.m. in the Double Six Gallery on Route 66/1001 W. Santa Fe Ave. Music is the universal language of mankind.

March 16 Movie “Moonlight”

Growing up can be a challenging time for the young. “Moonlight” highlights the life of young, African-American, Chiron. Deemed the Best Picture of 2016 by the Academy Awards, it will be shown at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 16 in the Double Six Gallery, located on Route 66/1001 W. Santa Fe Ave.

March 17 Happy Saint Patrick’s Day Make sure to wear green!

March 23 Art Exhibit #1 “Spring” Artist Call! “Spring” is the first themed exhibit for 2024 at the Double Six Gallery. Please submit your work by March 16. An artist’s reception will occur Saturday, March 23. Thanks to your artistic gifts, visitors and tourists learn about our Land of Enchantment. You are a Cibola and NM Ambassador.

March 30 Free Movie – “Oppenheimer”

“Oppenheimer”s coming! “Oppenheimer”s coming! Oppenheimer is coming to Grants! This highly-acclaimed movie will be streamed Saturday, March 30 in the Double Six Art Gallery. Film is 3 hours, 45 minutes long and bathrooms are close by. Film begins at 1 p.m. Venue is on Route 66, 1001 W. Santa Fe Ave.

April 13 Animal Fund-raising Dance Did you know that “feet” can be called “dogs”? Why don’t your “dogs” hit the dance floor at the Milan Family Fun Room next month for dogs and cats that need more than basic medical attention? The date is April 13 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 287-2763 or at-the-door. $20 per head goes to the Four Paws Fiesta Fund for the Animal Care Shelter.

May 23 Shellebrate World Turtle Day

Let’s Party! Grab your party hats, dancing shoes, sunglasses and find that old disco ball, as it’s almost time to party for World Turtle Day™ 2024! American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), a nonprofit organization established in 1990 for the protection of all species turtles and of tortoises, is shellebrating its 24th annual international World Turtle Day on May 23. Join the fun as this year’s theme is “Let’s Party” with rescue favorites Bunkle, Spinner and Evil who are waking up from hibernation and ready to rock the globe. Now, because of global warming, there is a more urgent reason to bring attention to the turtles of the world. It is estimated that 61 percent of turtle species are already extinct. Biologists and other experts predict the disappearance of turtles and tortoises in the wild within the next 50 years. Join the party at http://www.worldturtleday. org/
