The community calendar is reserved for non-profits and local events, these announcements will run at no charge but must be under 50 words. Deadline for community calendar submissions is Friday at 5 p.m.

Road Closure, City of Grants: There will be a road closure of Iron Ave. from Warren to Santa Fe Ave., including the Iron/High St. intersection, starting on Monday, February 19th, 2024 for 2 to 3 weeks for utility work. Residents of Iron and Hill St. will have access from Warren Ave. Please contact the City of Grants Special Projects office at 505-290-3722 for more information.

March 30 Free Movie – “Oppenheimer” “Oppenheimer” recently earned seven Academy Awards at the 96th ceremony. The film is based on the Kai/Sherwin book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J.R. Oppenheimer. Movie will be shown Saturday, March 30 in the Double Six Gallery at 11 a.m. Film is long but bathrooms are near and breaks will be included. Join us for this award-winning film on Route 66 / 1001 W. Santa Fe Ave.

In April, the Double Six Gallery celebrates the arts by showing two noteworthy films. Earlier it was “Woman in Gold”. Saturday, the 27th, “American Symphony”, a documentary about the couple Jon Batiste and wife, Suleika Jaouad will be shown at 1 p.m. Jon is a talented musician; Suleika – an author, speaker and artist.

April 5 April Astronomy Month El Malpais National Monument Friday April 5: Stargazing at Sandstone Bluffs from 8:30pm - 9:30 pm. Come out to Sandstone Bluffs for a constellation tour, stories, and deep sky viewing through a telescope. Sandstone Bluffs is located off of Highway 117, about 18 miles from Grants. All programs are free of charge and do not require reservations. Dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes, and bring a flashlight or headlamp with a red light setting if possible. April 6 Free Presentation on Navajo Code Talker Nez “Chester Nez, Navajo Code Talker” to be presented by Judith Avila, sponsored by New Mexico Humanities Council on April 6, 2024, at Cibola County History Museum, 525 West High St, 2PM. Admission is free – everyone welcome. Refreshments served.

A “Four Paws Fiesta Dance and Fundraiser” is set for Saturday, April 13, from 7 – 11 at the Milan Family Fun Room on Airport Road. Dance the night away for a good cause!

Free Movie – “Woman in Gold” In April, the Double Six Gallery celebrates the arts by showing two noteworthy films. “Woman in Gold” was a painting by Austrian Gustav Klimpt. It was stolen during WWII by the Nazis. Helen Mirren plays a relative who goes to court to reclaim her family’s treasure. Showtime is 1 p.m., Saturday, April 13 at the Gallery.

May 23 Shellebrate World Turtle Day Let’s Party! Grab your party hats, dancing shoes, sunglasses and find that old disco ball, as it’s almost time to party for World Turtle Day™ 2024! American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), a nonprofit organization established in 1990 for the protection of all species turtles and of tortoises, is shellebrating its 24th annual international World Turtle Day on May 23. Join the fun as this year’s theme is “Let’s Party” with rescue favorites Bunkle, Spinner and Evil who are waking up from hibernation and ready to rock the globe. Now, because of global warming, there is a more urgent reason to bring attention to the turtles of the world. It is estimated that 61 percent of turtle species are already extinct. Leonard Bernstein continues to host and teach about classical music in “Concerts for the People”, a dvd series shown every Friday at 4 p.m. in the Double Six Art Gallery on Route 66 / 1001 W. Santa Fe Ave. The New York Philharmonic plays examples to support the lesson. The arts are for EVERYONE!

Every Saturday Grants Library - Chess Night at the Library Weekly on Saturdays at 1:00PM at the Grants Public Library. Join us to enjoy a friendly game of Chess. Open to all skill levels. If you've never played but would like to learn we have a chess guy who can teach you. Its FREE and open to all ages.
