January 14 Free Movie – “Some Like it Hot”
It’s here! Finally. The chance to see Marilyn Monroe in her most successful film, “Some Like it Hot”. Often called America’s best comedy, the movie will be happily shown this Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. in the Double Six Art Gallery on Route 66 / 1001 W. Santa Fe Avenue. Be prepared to laugh. The Ballad of Placida Romero
The Cibola County Historical Society will host its first 2023 program and meeting Saturday, January 14, 2023 at the Cibola Historic Museum, 525 W. High Street from 2-4 p.m. The program will feature local author Bob Roland, speaking about and signing his recent book, “The Ballad of Placida Romero”. A true story about a brave woman who was captured by Apaches. Hear the rest of her story! Come to enjoy the program, have refreshments and see what the museum is doing. All are welcome.
January 16 MLK Day Celebration
On January 16, 2023, we will observe the 17th Celebration of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Grants, New Mexico. The celebration will be at Grants-Cibola County Complex / Convention Center; 515 W. High Street. Grants/Cibola County Schools Free Developmental Screening If you suspect your child has learning concerns or issues, including giftedness, and you would like to have your child’s skills screened, please call Desiraye Lopez 285-2643 to make an appointment. The screenings will be conducted on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at the Special Education Complex 402 North 2nd Street from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Due to COVID 19, no walk-ins at this time, please make an appointment. All screenings are free. Parents will be informed of screening results at the conclusion of the screening session. The screening will be conducted by a team of G/CCS employees. Ages 3-21 years old can participate.

Blues and Jazz singer Billie Holiday died at age 44; pop singer Diana Ross is 78. In her first acting role, portraying Holiday, Ross was nominated for an Academy Award. To honor two, successful, African American women, the Double Six Art Gallery will show the movie “Lady Sings the Blues” on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. Venue is route 66 / 1001 W. Santa Fe Avenue. February 25 Free Movie – “The Help” In the film, “The Help”, Viola Davis plays character Abileen, a Black, domestic worker in Jackson, Mississippi in the early 60s. She cooks, cleans, and cares for white babies. But, after the death of her son, Abileen finds herself changing. Ms. Davis was nominated for her work in the Academy Awards Best Actress category in 2011.
