GRANTS, NM — El Malpais National Monument is set to host two engaging and educational events on June 9, spotlighting significant historical figures and rich cultural traditions. These events, free to the public, promise to offer insightful experiences for visitors of all ages.
Both events will be held at the El Malpais Visitor Center, located at 1900 East Santa Fe Avenue in Grants, NM.
“WT Sherman: War
Maker, Peacemaker” Presentation by Shawn Price
At 12:30 PM, El Malpais Visitor Center will welcome speaker Shawn Price for his program titled 'WT Sherman: War Maker, Peacemaker.'
According to Lisa Dittman, program manager at El Malpais Visitor Center, presentation will delve into the life of William Tecumseh Sherman, focusing on his early years and his renowned exploits during the Civil War. Price will place a particular emphasis on Sherman’s pivotal role in the 1867-68 Peace Commission and the establishment of Nation-to-Nation agreements, which have left an enduring impact on his legacy.
Dineh Tah Navajo Dancers Performances
Earlier in the day, and again in the afternoon, the award-winning Dineh Tah Navajo Dancers will perform at the El Malpais Visitor Center.
Under the direction of Shawn Price, this talented group of young dancers has been showcasing traditional Navajo dance since 1993, both in the U.S. and internationally. Dittman said their performances, scheduled for 10:30-11 AM and 2-2:30 PM, will highlight the deep religious and cultural connections intrinsic to their dance traditions.
