GRANTS, NM – Artist, Danielle Palumbo, introduced the first of her five drawing classes on Saturday, July 27 at the Cibola Arts Council.
The class was relieved that their first assignment was to draw their hand. But there was a definite purpose to this simple-sounding task. The finished product was not to have a perfect human hand. That might be discouraging.
By drawing your own hand as a first exercise, the students are being taught to see.
This method was designed by Betty Edwards, after researching methods for teaching art over ten years. The idea was to make something fun that is easy and pleasurable. She has published her new method in her book, “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.”
Palumbo encouraged her class by telling them, “It will take 5 classes to see improvement.”
Ms. Edwards teaches her method in workshops around the country. Her 5day course is available to corporations that want to help their employees improve their work performance.
Her drawing method is reported to have helped corporate employees with their problem-solving by teaching them how to view things differently. They become more confident and competent.
But, drawing can also be an enjoyable way to express oneself through art.
