It was a surprise party, of sorts. Penny Conner, 17, and her friends attended the Youth Art Camp at the Double Six Gallery intending to make a tie-dye shirt. But since they were all together, and having fun creating their own expressive t-shirts, they decided it was a party.

The project was guided by Youth Art Camp Director, Myriah Scarpati, and Gallery Associate, Ian Smith, who was adept at the process.

Briefly, the process goes like this:

• Apply rubber bands to your t-shirt to give it the desired designs.

• Apply the dye.

• Let the garment set for 24 hours.

• Remove the bands and rinse in cold water, then vinegar.

• Wash. Enjoy. Scarpati plans the popular tie-dye project for about once every quarter and sometimes uses a different method, the ice method. By putting ice on top of a banded shirt, covering it with powdered dye, as the ice melts it slowly colors the shirt at different densities.

The event is open to the public, so you may join the next time the Youth Art Camp gets colorful.
