GALLUP, N.M. – Drivers traveling through Gallup on Interstate 40 should watch for construction activity as the New Mexico Department of Transportation begins a more than $15 million safety rehabilitation project.
The project began May 11 and will cover a roughly four-mile stretch of I-40 in both directions between mile markers 22.1 and 25.7.
NMDOT District Six and contractor Mountain States Construction will complete several roadway safety improvements, including cross-slope correction, shoulder reconstruction, mill and inlay work, new signs and striping, guardrail installation, and culvert pipe cleaning or replacement.
Two lanes are expected to remain open in each direction during the project. The speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph through the work zone.
Construction is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with no weekend work planned.
This phase of construction is expected to continue through mid-June, weather permitting. NMDOT said intermittent night work may also take place while crews build detours.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down, follow posted signs and detours, and stay alert for construction workers and equipment.
The project is part of NMDOT’s broader effort to improve roadway safety across New Mexico. The department’s Target Zero initiative focuses on eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries through infrastructure improvements, public safety programs and partnerships with local, tribal and regional stakeholders.
