GRANTS, N.M. — Motorists traveling Interstate 40 west of Grants should prepare for construction and possible delays beginning Monday as the New Mexico Department of Transportation starts a $3.2 million rehabilitation project covering nine miles of the interstate.
NMDOT District Six and Mountain States Constructors Inc. will place a 3.5-inch asphalt overlay on the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-40 between mile markers 54 and 63.
The project begins Sept. 14 and is expected to continue through mid-October, weather permitting.
Crews are scheduled to work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. NMDOT said motorists should expect minor delays and plan additional travel time while work is underway.
The project represents a $3.2 million investment in roadway rehabilitation and safety improvements along the heavily traveled interstate corridor west of Grants.
Drivers traveling through the construction zone are being asked to reduce their speed, obey posted signs and trafficcontrol devices, and remain alert for workers and construction equipment.
The I-40 work adds to several NMDOT District Six projects affecting Cibola County motorists this month, including ongoing pavement work on NM 53 south of Grants and NM 6 east of Highland Meadows.
