Cibola County's Food and Agriculture Sectors Strengthen Local Economy

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – Recent data from the annual Feeding the Economy report highlights the contributions of the food and agriculture sectors to the local economy of Cibola County in terms of job creation, wages, and overall economic output.

The report, titled Feeding the Economy, is a collaboration of 25 entities across the country, working to understand the economic impact of agriculture across the 50 states.

According to the report, Cibola County has seen a vibrant increase in its agricultural and foodrelated industries, with 871 direct jobs reported within the sector. These jobs collectively earned wages amounting to $27,375,000, contributing significantly to the county's economic output. This output shows the county can not only sustain its workforce but also bolster the local economy through its agricultural productivity.

Supplier and induced jobs further amplify the county's economic vitality. The food and agriculture sectors supported 654 supplier jobs and 492 induced jobs, which, combined with direct employment, showcases the multiplier effect these industries have on job creation.

The total supplier wages reached $44,709,300, and induced wages stood at $27,674,600, signaling robust growth and a stable economic foundation provided by these sectors.

The larger landscape of New Mexico's food and agriculture industry, as reported by New Mexico Agriculture Secretary Jeff Witte, is thriving with increases in jobs, wages, and overall economic impact. The state's total food and ag industry economic impact rose to $43.12 billion, marking a significant leap from the previous year.

Echoing Witte's sentiments, Larry Reagan, President of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau, said that despite challenges the agriculture sector continues to play a crucial role in supporting rural economies and managing natural resources sustainably.
