The Grants Police Department will be strategically setting up several Flock Safety cameras throughout the City of Grants. Flock Safety cameras are license plate recognition cameras that take still photos that focus solely on a vehicle and ensure a clear view of the license plate. The cameras scan a vehicle’s license plate and can send a realtime alert to police when a vehicle is entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) if the vehicle is stolen, Amber alerts, silver alerts, sex offenders, missing persons or wanted fugitives.
The Grants Police Department values the privacy of the citizens. The Flock Safety cameras do not use facial recognition and it does not do traffic violations. In the state of New Mexico there is no expectation of privacy in a license plate. A license plate is visible to the public eye, the data contained in that license plate is only accessible by law enforcement personnel for official purposes.
The Grants Police Department is excited to use the new technology to make the City of Grants a safer place for the citizens.
