GRANTS, NM – Grants Police Department arrested local woman Verna Lorenzo for assault and battery after a verbal argument with a man at the Sunray Apartment complex at 1017 Lobo Canyon Road.
Just before 5 p.m. on June 10, Cibola Regional Communication Center, the 911 dispatch, received a call requesting an officer at the apartment complex, the caller left no additional information.
Police were quickly dispatched, where they made contact with three people – two men and one woman – outside the building. Officers asked the group what was happening, the older of the two men spoke and requested that police remove the woman from the building. He said the two were involved in a shouting match that became aggressive and he didn’t want to be around the woman, identified as Lorenzo.
Lorenzo informed officers that she was not interested in speaking with them and began to walk away. With no cause to detain her, Lorenzo began to walk toward the New West Apartments on 1069 Bonita Avenue. As she walked away, the older man said he wanted to show officers injuries Lorenzo allegedly gave him on his left shoulder. His story was corroborated by the younger man with him, whom police identified as the older man’s son. According to the police report, the son alleged he observed Lorenzo attack his father. Police called for medical backup to check on the older man.
As medical arrived on scene, officers moved to speak with Lorenzo. They caught up with her in the parking lot of New West Apartment complex.
According to the police report, Lorenzo was combative with police, refusing to cooperate or answer questions. Officers noted that Lorenzo became more aggressive and smelled of alcohol, they placed her under arrest.
After being medically cleared for transportation by Cibola General Hospital, officers booked Lorenzo at Cibola County Correctional Center in the Village of Milan.
