GRANTS, N.M. – In the early morning of February 8, Grants Fire and Rescue was called to put out a housefire in Mt. Taylor Addition in Grants, New Mexico. The fire, on 132 Michael Street, fully engulfed the residence and left the building charred. There were no injuries reported as a result of this fire.

GFR Chief Robert Hays said crews arrived on scene at 5:05 a.m. They were able to quickly get a handle on the fire, putting it out in 30 minutes. While they were battling the fire, crews had to deal with cold temperatures, as the weather pushed as low as five degrees Fahrenheit.

Milan Fire, Superior Ambulance, and Cibola County Fire Command were also on scene, assisting GFR to put out the fire.

Heavy black smoke billowed from the building as the fire raged. Fire crews made an initial attack on the outside of the building which proved successful, allowing crews to make entry into the home to tackle the remaining flames. GFR said in a statement that heavy flames existed inside the home which were quickly extinguished.

In their statement, GFR said, “A huge thank you to Mayor Erik Garcia for providing personnel with food and beverages, and thank you to Milan Supermarket for donating those beverages and donuts.”

Chief Hays issued a thank you to all agencies who assisted GFR in putting out the housefire.
