The GHS boys and girls tennis teams have been busy with recent meets at home and on the road. The lady Pirates have mustered a record 5-2, 4-1 since play began on April 27.
“I think we are doing pretty good all things being considered,” said Antonio Williams the GHS girl’s tennis head coach. The only district loss was to Belen (9-0) and they were not full strength at that meet, “We should have beat Belen, it would have been close,” said Williams.
The lady Pirates are led by sophomore Chloe Rychner (1-6), the current number one, and the current number two, Kylette Garcia (6-1) and number three Karsyn Cash (2-0).
GHS boys head coach, Anita Willcox, is pleased so far with where her team is at, “It’s a little bit of a different season—we have a full roster; Seven students out; They are doing a great job, “said Willcox.
The Pirates are 4-3, 2-3 after seven meets. The Pirates have four returning players and 3 new players.
“We are completive and young,” added Willcox.
The Pirates are led by junior Kolton Bratzel who is 2-2 who is the current number one.
“Working hard every day at practice pays off on the court,” said Bratzel’s mantra. Fellow Junior Joshua Willcox is number two (2-2) followed by senior Ernesto Fernandez who is number 3 (2-1).
Both teams will host a nondistrict meet with Farmington on Wednesday, May 19.
