Pirate spring sports closing out seasons
High School sports are winding down as summer begins. Tristian Martinez (9-0), a senior at Grants High School, took the blue trophy at Girls State wrestling state tournament as she defeated Lilah Yazzie (6-7) of Newcomb in the 180lb division in that championship bout. Martinez defeated Yazzie by a fall at 1:31. The match was held in on Saturday, May 29.
Pirate tennis
The lady Pirates tennis team is 7-1, 5-1 after defeating St. Pius (7-3,4-2) on Saturday, May 22. Number one, Chloe Rychener, defeated Mia Hernandez, 7-5, 6-3. Number two, Kylette Garcia defeated Nora Hennessy 7-6, 6-4. Number three, Evangeline Fernandez defeated Briana Lucero-Brown 6-4, 6-4. In doubles Rychener and Garcia tied with Hernandez and Hennesy 6-4 (4- 6), 6-2. On Tuesday, May 25 the lady Pirates defeated the Hope Huskies (2-9, 2-3) by a score of 8-1. Number one, Chloe Rychener was defeated by Marissa Pattison 6-3 and 6-4. Number two, Kylette Garcia defeated he opponent 6-4, 6-2. Number three, Kynlie Cash defeated Salome Freed 6-2 and 6-3. In doubles, Rychener and Garcia defeated Pattison and Cali Tuggle 7-5 and 6-4
The GHS boys Tennis team is 5-4 and 2-4 after their last two meets. The team was defeated by St. Pius (6-4, 6-3 on May 22. Number one, Joshua Willcox was defeated by Monte Taylor 6-3,6- 1. On May 25 the Pirates defeated Hope Christian 5-4. Number one, Wilcox was defeated by Luciano Silveria 6-0, 6-0. Number two, Kolton Bratzel defeated Ron Pattison 6-3, 3-6 and 10-8.
Pirate baseball
The GHS boys Pirate baseball team is 5-10, 0-4 after dropping two recent games. The Pirates were defeated by Belen (5-10,3-1) 19-0 on Tuesday, June 1 and they also lost to St. Pius (13-2,4-0)on Friday, June 4 by a score of 7-0. Next up for the Pirates will be a home game on June 11 at home against district rival the Valencia Jaguars (6-9, 1- 3) then the Pirates will wrap up the season with their last home game on Friday, June 18 as they host the Belen Eagles.
Pirate softball
The lady Pirates softball team is 1-16, 1-4 after dropping their last 2 contests. On Tuesday, June 1 the lady Pirates were defeated by the lad Eagles of Belen 25-5 and then on Thursday, June 3 they were defeated by St. Pius by a score of 17-2. Next up for the lady Pirates will be an away game on Thursday, June 10 against the Valencia Jaguars (4-12,3-2) then on Thursday, June 15 they will host the Highland Hornets (3-11, 0-4) followed by their last game on Thursday, June 17 when they host the lady Eagles of Belen (9- 7,9-1).
