Mayor Recount to be held March 23

Body

GRANTS, N.M. – The City of Grants will hold a recount in the contest for mayor after a close race on March 1 separated the top two vote earners by only eight votes.

Current City Councilor Erik Garcia was the election night winner, receiving 528 votes. Former NM State Senator Clemente Sanchez was the second largest vote earner, receiving 520 votes.

By New Mexico State Law, a recount must be automatically triggered if none of the top vote earners break one percent of the vote. One percent of the vote in this election would have been 13 votes. Because neither candidate breached this threshold, a recount was automatically triggered by the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office.

The recount will take place at 9 a.m. on March 23 at the Grants City Hall Chamber, 600 W. Santa Fe Avenue. The Cibola Citizen will have the results of this recount in the March 30 edition, and on our website, www.CibolaCitizen.com , as soon as we are able to get the results.
