MILAN, NM – A significant fire broke out at the waste management transfer station off of Post Office Flats Road early this morning on August 12, prompting a swift response from multiple local agencies.
At precisely 5:55 a.m., the Milan Fire Department, accompanied by Grants Fire and Rescue, Cibola Fire Command, Bluewater Village Volunteer Fire Department, San Rafael Volunteer Fire Department, and others swiftly mobilized to tackle the emergency. Additional support on the scene included the Milan Police, New Mexico State Police, Continental Divide Electric, and the Cibola County Roads Department. According to a statement from Milan Fire Department, the blaze was initially reported by a lone caller. Upon arrival, an Incident Command was promptly established, allowing the assembled crews to assess the situation and devise a mitigating plan. Their coordinated efforts proved effective, and they managed to successfully attack and extinguish the fire.
While crews were on scene for over four hours, the community made sure they were well taken care of. The Milan Fire Department Support provided breakfast and refreshments, and City of Grants Mayor Erik Garcia supplied additional refreshments and snacks for the firefighters.
