New Mexico Committee Gears Up to Nominate Presidential Primary Candidates for 2024

SANTA FE, N.M. – The New Mexico Presidential Primary Nomination by Committee is set to convene in person on Friday, December 22, 2023. Their mission: nominate presidential primary candidates and certify the names of those supported by major political parties in the state for the 2024 presidential primary.

The meeting will take place at 10 a.m. (MST) in the New Mexico Supreme Court Courtroom, located at 237 Don Gaspar Ave., Santa Fe, New Mexico 87501. The event will also be open to the public through a live stream broadcast on the website of the Supreme Court of New Mexico at https://www.nmcourts.go v/live-video-stream/.

State law mandates the committee's formation, consisting of key figures in New Mexico's political landscape. NMSA 1-15A-5 mandates this action, where the state will pick the official electors who will cast New Mexico’s Electoral College ballots.

The committee is chaired by C. Shannon Bacon, Chief Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court. The committee includes Javier Martinez (D – Bernalillo), Speaker of the House of Representatives; T. Ryan Lane (R – San Juan), Minority Floor Leader of the House of Representatives; Mimi Stewart (D – Bernalillo), President Pro Tempore of the Senate; Gregory A. Baca (R – Bernalillo, Valencia), Minority Floor Leader of the Senate; Jessica Velasquez, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico; Steve Pearce, Chair of the Republican Party of New Mexico; and Joshua Chappell, Chair of the Libertarian Party of New Mexico.

The committee's task is to nominate candidates for the 2024 presidential primary who are generally advocated for and nationally recognized or supported by major political parties in the state. Their nominations will be certified to the secretary of state, ensuring a smooth and organized process for the major political parties participating in the upcoming presidential primary for the office of President of the United States.
