FRIDAY AFTERNOON SPECIAL TV SHOWS

This month, we will once again show the Volcano film for those who read about it in Cibola Citizen’s review. Also showing this month is a film related to Veterans, Driveways, in which Brian Denehy portrays a veteran with compassion and dignity.

VOLCANOES AGAIN: Sleeping Monsters, Sacred Fires is worth seeing for its Native American legends that help us recognize our relationship with the mountain we belong to, and science’s predictions. Carly Monnin from El Malpais National Park will be present to give a short talk about volcanic activity in New Mexico. At the Double Six Gallery, October 11, 4 p.m.

DRIVEWAYS: A film in which Brian Denehy plays a veteran of the Korean War who befriends a young Korean American boy who has become his neighbor. For those of a certain age, or who are close to anyone with Alzheimer’s disease, there are quietly relevant scenes that redeem the sadness of loss and change. At the Double Six Gallery, October 25, 4 p.m.

OCTOBER FILM RECOMMENDATIONS

Opera! Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute are romantic comedies that follow the trials and adventures of overcoming obstacles.

In The Marriage of Figaro, two servants, Figaro and Susanna, must connive to prevent their master, Count Almaviva, from seducing Susanna. There are numerous complications involving others with desire or jealousy, but throughout, the music enlivens the buffoonery.

The Magic Flute is more of a coming-of-age story. Two men, one comic and one sincere, see beyond illusions and seductions to win true love.

FEATURED ARTIST

Doryan Candler has been with the Double Six Gallery for several months. Her mosaics are simply beautiful, and she uses second-hand objects, helping to reduce our waste. Doryan and her husband own The Junkyard Brewery and are happy residents of Grants.
