MILAN, N.M. – Milan Fire Department’s dedicated volunteer firefighters aren’t slowing down anytime soon. With wildland fire season stretching year-round and emergency calls demanding skilled responders, these volunteers are committing themselves to rigorous training.
Currently, half of the department’s crew is enrolled in an intensive four-month EMT course, dedicating every weekend to learning lifesaving medical skills. Meanwhile, another third of the department is pushing toward wildland firefighting certifications to meet the ongoing demands of brush fire response.
This past weekend, several MFD volunteers participated in the S-211 portable pumps class, hosted by Cibola County Fire and EMS at Milan Fire Department Station 1. Under the guidance of Lead Instructor Rob Barr, the firefighters honed their skills in operating portable water pumps—critical equipment for battling blazes in remote areas.
Chief Daniel Urioste praised the commitment of his team, acknowledging the long hours and dedication they put into their training. “MFD doesn’t slow down these days,” he said. “Our volunteers are constantly learning and preparing to serve this community at a moment’s notice.”
With volunteers balancing firefighting, EMT training, and wildland certifications, the Milan Fire Department continues to build a highly skilled team ready to respond whenever duty calls.
