Letters to the Editor . . .

Dear editor, The protesters this week in front of Grants City Hall were about 15 when I drove by.

Governor Lujan Grisham wants universal child health care, health care reform, public safety, K-12 education improvements, economic development, juvenile crime reform, ban on cell phones in schools, medical malpractice reform, elimination of gross receipts taxes on medical services and net zero emissions by 2030.

In 2021, House Bill 75 raised the malpractice cap to $750,000 for independent doctors, for hospitals, $6 million by 2026. In 2023, Senate Bill 523 established a $1 million cap for independent outpatient clinics. Between 2019 and 2024, NM experienced a net loss of 248 practicing physician the only state in the U.S. to see such a decline. This left many NM residents with fewer healthcare options, forcing them to travel long distances for medical care or not to go at all. In NM Immigrants with no social security number or proof of immigration status including undocumented immigrants can safely apply for: WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) EMSA (Emergency Medical Services for Aliens) School breakfast, school lunch, summer meals programs, and hospital charity care programs, community clinics, and county health programs. NM welfare is 23% higher than the next highest state, let alone on a critical issue like welfare. Republicans gaining candidates in NM, when an outsized proportion of the population is receiving government handouts, is very unlikely. NM has a rise in violent juvenile crime, with youth offenders committing increasingly serious offenses at younger ages. Youth involved in the justice system remains relatively low, but trends indicate that violent incidents, particularly those involving firearms, are concentrated in certain counties and communities, including Bernalillo, Doña Ana, and Valencia. Approximately 290 coal-fired power plants closed in the United States since 2010, 2 major coal plants, and 1 gas refinery in our area alone. Grisham's 45% proposals for reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050.

NM Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) stays for children have doubled since 2023. An executive order signed by Grisham mandates children in state custody will no longer be housed overnight in offices. Despite these efforts, there are ongoing concerns about the effectiveness of CYFD's. Excuse me if I do not believe a thing the governor, democrats, or the protesters do or say.

Signed Mr. Harry L. Hall USAF Veteran Retired Police Sheriff Lt. 38+ Years

Dear editor, I’m writing because I’m deeply concerned about the fear and confusion surrounding immigration enforcement right now.

My neighbors who feel like ICE is “everywhere,” including in and around Cubero. Our schools have even had to post on Facebook that immigration enforcement officers are not on campus.

I’m also angry that Americans are being killed by ICE. They aren’t police officers and don’t have jurisdiction over citizens.

America deserves verified facts, full transparency, and real accountability. Law enforcement power must be exercised carefully, lawfully, and with respect for human life and civil rights.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noems needs to be impeached for failing to fix this.

Sincerely, Henry Meyer
