The new norm: …Now in February!

I hope the cold, short days as well as this pandemic are nearing their end and we can get back to some type of normal life and can attend major social events with our granddaughters that we have in the past. Take February for example: Last year we attended the Super National car show in Albuquerque at the Manual Lujan Building on the State Fair grounds. We met Ian Roussel of Full Custom car restorations there. Our grand -daughters sat in a monster Jeep and we took pictures of them. A week later or so we attended the New Mexico Trout Association “Trout Conclave “ where we looked at bugs under micro scopes and got stickers, watched fishing movies and lunched at food trucks around. I told Evelyn I sure miss these events.

But wait! I have this idea! (I know, know, but you will get used to it). “Let’s get the little girls for a sleep-over and have a car show and fishing meeting at our home.” She agreed and our daughters let us pick them up for a couple nights with the provision: “No going out of the house and no visitors.” We agreed. We asked for each of the little girls bring fishing rods, and a toy car for the “Grammy-national” car show.

The car show went well, each Granddaughter had a Hot Wheels style car that they got to clean using toothpicks and q-tips, then wax and present to the audience, being us. Mia went first with a custom Mustang that she described in detail and we all voted on best Mustang and she took first place, (applause). I followed with a 1950 Johnny Lightening Suburban, votes were cast and I took first place for Suburban’s. (Applause) Then Nora presented her “49 Caddy complete with fender skirts and votes were cast for best old Caddy and she took first place. (Applause). Then Isabella with a red metallic new Cadillac sports car, bright and shiny it was voted first place in the new Caddy entry. (Applause). Autumn followed with a blue 32 Ford roadster with a chrome engine. Votes cast resulting in first place for best 32 Ford.

(Applause). Then Lila showed her number 9 stunt car that she challenged all to race after the show. Votes were cast and first place was awarded for best #9 stunt car. (Applause). The 49 Caddy was the People’s Choice awarded to Nora; after all were served fresh baked apple squares and ice cream in the winner’s circle.

Fishing rods were readied for this year’s adventures and we learned how to tie hooks on to lines using the refrigerator handle as a hook and small rope to simulate the line. Perfect knots… and done….

..now in February!
