11th Ranked Lady Pirates 11-7 on Eve of Districts

GRANTS, N.M. - The Grants High School Lady Pirates are having a winning season of their own at 11-7 and currently ranked 11th in 4A they are ready to open up their district season.

They will start their district play on January 20th with a challenging game as they host the 12-5 Valencia Jaguars who are also ranked sixth in 4A.

“We plan to bring all our tools together and see what happens,” said Lady Pirate head coach Jesi Mandagaran.

“If we remain the competing team, we have been all season – great things can happen.”

Mandagaran also added, “It’s time we put 4 quarters of consistent good decisionmaking basketball.”

The Pirates wrapped up the last three games 2-1.

They defeated Miyamura (4-10) 41-28 on January 13 and then went on the road to Espanola (8-8) defeating the lady Sundevils 45-36 on January 15. In that game, Demi Martinez led the Pirates with 12 points. The Pirates fell to the second ranked Lady Bengals of Gallup (14-2) on January 17 on the road by a score of 6747.

“We are trying to find some consistency now with our playing,” said Mandagaran of those last three games. “We have to yet go out four quarters together— hopefully that’s coming soon.”

In district 5 4A the Lady Pirates face tough competition not just from Valencia, St. Pius is ranked tenth and currently are 8-8. Highland has an 8-6 record followed by Belen who has a 7-10 record.
